Olympic Legacy Project

To mark the one year anniversary of London 2012, Halton Health and Fitness Club launched it's very own “Legacy Project” aimed at aspiring athletes from all sports aged 8-18 years and offering them 12 months free gym membership, along with strength and conditioning support from Gemma. It was designed to assist our local sporting community of youth athletes with their physical development and preparation for their sport. One year on, the project has been a great success, receiving recognition from Lord Sebastian Coe and positive feedback and results from athletes on the project (see below).

The process

  1. Contact Gemma (above) to express your initial interest in the project.
  2. If appropriate, you will be provided with an application form to complete and return to Gemma.
  3. If your application is successful you will be invited down to the gym for a show around and further chat about your sport and the project. A date for your induction to the project will then be set.
  4. Your induction will include a health questionnaire, health and safety check of all gym equipment, a one hour individualised strength and conditioning session with Gemma to set your specific gym programme. The cost of this is £39.95 plus a £10 refundable deposit for your gym access card. You will not be charged our £40 joining fee!
  5. You will then be provided with a typed up programme to follow and one years free gym membership!

The project has now been running for 3 years and has supported over 16 local aspiring athletes. Meet some of them and hear what they feel being part of the project has brought to them:

Current athletes

Some athletes are on their first year on the project and others who have come to the end of their first year have been selected to continue for a second or third year based on their commitment, attitude and development shown. They receive another years free gym membership and a greater variety of sports science support. Athletes in this section are those under years one and two currently.

The legacy project has enabled me to improve on all aspects of my performance. Recently selected for u16 England, Gemma has created a training program which is suitable for the level I'm playing at, identifying key parts of the game that I could improve on-like becoming physically stronger on the ball. This has noticeable impacted on my performance on the pitch. With supportive staff and a friendly environment, Halton gym is a great place to train and to enhance my performance with a wide range of equipment and fantastic facilities, I am very grateful for this experience.

Gemma has studied my sport and designed a training programme that compliments my Gymnastic training regime. In 2015 my partnership competed Nationally and Internationally, reaching the Final of the FIAC Cup in Flanders, Belgium. I have found all of the trainers at Halton, are very supportive and prepared to offer advice and support while I am training. I am currently training towards the British Championships in July 2016. The scheme has improved my work life balance as I am studying for my A Levels and train 5 days a week. Thank you Halton Tennis Centre.

Level: England under 15 High Performance Camp (HiPac) and have reached Nationals at club level.

So far this year, I have reached Futures Cup in the single system which is a national hockey tournament for the top people in the country and the stage before England Selection. My Oxford Hockey Team also won the plate competition for the ladies two’s team across England at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in April. Additionally, (even though it’s not hockey) I went to Finland in the summer with the England U16’s Girls Ice Hockey Team and we competed against the national Finnish Squad. Bracknell Bees (my ice hockey team) also won U16’s nationals this year.

Currently playing my senior hockey for Marlow, I have been through the England Hockey pathway, right up to The England U18 Selection tournament. My basketball team bucks hornets won the u16 league last year and this year I am playing for the u18 team which is a year ahead of me, we are so far undefeated in the league and there is a promising season ahead of us. Also next summer I am hoping to make the south England team through hard work and dedication. I also played football last season and won managers best player for Haddenham football club. I also competed in the Coombe hill run and came 7th which is a personal best and I will be training for that next year as well. The legacy project has helped me greatly in improving my strength and fitness and I am definitely seeing improvements in my performance and I am very grateful to be given this opportunity.

Level: In the 2013 season I was number one in the country for discus under thirteens, number two in the country for shot and number four all time

Over the past year I have frequented Halton and I really think it has been beneficial to my athleticism. I have won the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championship for the second year in a row and hope to compete in it again this year alongside a 500m row in December. I have played for the under 15 (when I was an under 14) and under 16 (when I was an under 15) Wasps Academy in multiple matches and a tournament, for several of these I started. I also started for the under 15s as an under 15 for the Academy. I captained Bucks rugby last year and was named as squad captain in the only competitive match of the season in which I scored two and we won by 69 points to nil. For my school, we once again defended our title as county champions and hope to this season. In discus last season I placed second in English Schools and third in at Nationals (for Britain). I also won the Southern Counties competition. I was third in the UK last year for discus and 32nd all time. My discus season was not what I had hoped for but I look forward to next season as an opportunity to develop and potentially receive my first England call-up. Halton has really helped me develop as an athlete and as a power lifter thanks to helpful advice and excellent facilities. I would like to thank Halton for a wonderful year of gym work and hope to be considered for next year.

My basketball team (Bucks Hornets) has won our under 16 league we are in and played well into the playoffs. Also I am now in a starter for the u18 men's team which is the age group above mine. The legacy project has helped me become more commanding on the court due to added physical presence that has helped me achieve my place as one of the leading scorers over the last year. Looking to the future I am hoping to get into the regional team again.

The legacy programme has enabled me to have access to a wide range gym equipment helping me to improve on all areas of strength and stamina. I train at Halton Health and Fitness Club weekly and have a strength and conditioning session with Gemma once a working to a set programme. Gemma’s guidance has helped me with my muscle gain and focus on other areas to complement the rugby development and training with the Wasps academy. Being able to have such easily accessible facilities has certainly helped with my strength and core and within a monitored and professional environment has also prevented any over-training which as equally important to my pursuit of a future on the rugby field.

The access to the gym that the Legacy project has provided me with has really benefited my development as a basketball player. We have been focusing on strength and speed, and the work that has been going on in the gym has had a noticeable impact on my performance on court. The strength and endurance of my legs have increased noticeably, meaning I am able to be more powerful and explosive on court, and also faster. The arm strength work has allowed me to develop my 3-point shot, and I am now an overall stronger contender on court. Thank you.
